USA: Artist turns used paintbrushes into ladies from famous paintings

“For San Francisco-based artist Rebecca Szeto, a paintbrush isn’t just her medium, it’s her canvas as well. Instead of just painting to create an artwork, she uses brushes as artworks themselves! By carving out the handles of used paintbrushes, she turns these unsuspecting materials into the ladies from famous paintings, complete with skirts and dresses made from bristles soaked in paint.

‘These works play with notions of re-forming beauty and value’, says Szeto. ‘I use humble, end-of-life, mass-produced materials inspired by my experience as a faux finisher. The paintbrush is self-referential, acting as both subject and object. It refers to the history of painting, through the medium of paint, with its own tool’.”
