All The Queen’s Ravens are an enigmatic six-piece at large on the London music scene. Their sound is a flamboyant bi-lingual mix of folk, pop and sultry flamenco alluding to blues, gospel and americana, delivering a foot-stomping, dress-swirling bagful of attention-grabbing magic.
Fronted by two ladies with a devilish vocal chemistry and style bursting with sequins and glamour, their songs take a sidelong glance at good old fashioned romance, feverishly combining influences diverse as Kate Bush, Johnny Cash, Cat Power, Slayer, and the Punch Brothers. Their songwriting is accomplished and intricate, nutured from the fires of misadventure and high drama in Hackney, fusing rich Spanish and English folk harmonies with mandolin, guitar, percussion and upright bass for blistering americana-pop romps and pin-drop Spanish ballads.
Performing at some of London’s most prominent venues including The Borderline, The Barfly, Green Note Camden, and Half Moon Putney, there’s as much for the eye to feast on as there is for the ears, with flamboyant glitz for the girls and urban lumberjack for the gents. The band’s irrepressible energy makes All The Queen’s Ravens’ live performance a truly captivating experience, securing the enviable reputation as on of the most exciting live acts around. Think the soundtrack to the best Tarantino film he never made.
I was more than happy to catch ATQR at Green Note a while back.
My friend had just had her bag stolen in a Camden pub. She was pretty fed up, to put it mildly, but she still managed to enjoy herself at this gig. Yes, they’re that good.
