23/09/12

I stumbled upon this exhibition yesterday and boy was I glad! I have a great affection for this building and always love it when it is open to the public for exhibitions.  Yesterday I had the opportunity to view beautiful dresses painstakingly embroidered with golden thread by Acton-based designer Denise Mahmud. I woke up this morning thinking her spider webs would look fantastic on Philip Tracey hats!  I also enjoyed chatting to sculptor Gary March. His intriguing pieces are often carved from rescued wood and stone. I especially loved the piece crafted from Purbeck stone and also the small head made from a find on the London riverbank. Gary also has a carving in St George’s Chapel In Windsor.I kept climbing upwards and discovered Charmaine Watkins. Her artwork was perfectly framed by the raw brick wall she had chosen as a backdrop and I especially liked the work titled Mothership. At the very top, there are copper lampshades designed by Jade Folawiyo, glowing in the scarily dark setting and further along Paris-trained textile designer Bezemy Mailan has an eye-catching wall hanging on display, alongside clothes. An interesting piece is a collaboration with the West African weavers working the loom on the ground floor as you enter the building. There is a lot more to this exhibition and a short visit cannot do it justice. There are more than 150 artists represented here and I was so glad to meet some of them and hear them talk about their work. It’s not every day I get the opportunity to chat to the Colonel of the Charles Town Maroons, learn a bit about their history and see some amazing examples of secret drums.

The Big Four-O Exhibition @ Orleans House Gallery from 29 Sept

See on Scoop.itLondon Life

This autumn, Orleans House Gallery celebrates its 40th anniversary, and commemorates 50 years since the death of its founder Mrs Nellie Ionides, through a fascinating new exhibition The Big Four-O. The free exhibition, which runs from 29 September until 25 November 2012, brings together 40 works from the Richmond Borough Art Collection selected by members of the local community. All of the individuals or family groups have some link to the Twickenham-based gallery, from visual artists, people in the museums and heritage sector, current and previous education participants, to dog walkers who enjoy the tranquillity of the grounds and woodland.
